From Cover to Cover

Hi Reader,

It is often said, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover.’
Yet the cover is one of the first things we look at when we want to buy a book. If you happen to buy a book in person, you may take it off the shelf, look at the cover, and turn it over to read the blurb on the back. Both will either convince you to make the purchase or not.

Walking through the final steps in preparation for printing, I was reminded that not only is the front cover of the book important, but the few words on the back cover that summarize the book’s content are incredibly crucial as well. No pressure, right?

This story touches on many themes, and I struggled to come up with a short but adequate summary that would include a hint of the themes enclosed in the book. Here’s what we came up with:

The coming-of-age memoir of a young Jamaican immigrant—a stranger in many lands—facing the challenges of race, identity and belonging while finding God in the most surprising and beautiful places.

My story takes place on three continents with many countries, towns and homes in between. I wanted the cover to touch on the things I knew as constants wherever I have lived—God’s presence, the sunset, and a body of water. From the Caribbean Sea to the Mediterranean, from the Ganges to the Atlantic. He has been faithful and these elements have been steadfast reminders.

Cover artist, Megan Whitfield, beautifully captured the mystery and majesty of these constants in the cover of the book. I wanted to give you a first glance. Here it is!

What do you think?

Lastly, I would be remiss to not highlight the endorsers of my book who read it ahead of time and wrote extremely generous endorsements that will also be added to the cover.

As a subscriber, I will need your help as well once the book is available for sale in March. Reviews make a world of difference in keeping the book visible for those considering it. I've been learning a lot about the back end of what makes a book successful. I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the cover.

Let me know what you think of it!

Hi Reader, This week I went to the post office to mail some copies of my book to my amazingly supportive endorsers. As we finalized the transaction, the young lady behind the counter asked, “Did you write this book? What is it about?”I gave her a high-level overview, and her eyes widened with intrigue.“My mom is Jamaican and my dad is African American. I can’t imagine the culture clash you went through. I feel it, especially about school, between me and my cousins.” My mind raced as to how to...

A View of the World

Hi Reader, When I was ten years old, I made my first solo trip to the United States. I flew to Florida from Jamaica to visit friends and eventually, my grandmother who lived in Jacksonville. That’s me in a handmade skirt and shirt made by my mom. Complete with a straw hat in hand and a box of gifts at my feet, I was the image of a Caribbean girl in a new world. That trip opened my appetite for travel; it was the first of many solo trips. It’s taken me almost a decade to compile, write and...

Hi Reader, It's probably the worst kept secret at this point...my book is available on Amazon for purchase! Long story short, it was launched sooner than expected, and I would like to use these last few weeks before the official launch date to build up reviews on the site. Can I ask you to purchase a copy, read it over the next month and post a review? Reviews are critical to convince potential buyers to purchase a book! If you've never been an Amazon review type of person--this is your time...
